Privacy

RHike is built privacy-first. This website:

• uses no cookies and shows no consent banner - there is nothing to consent to;
• has no accounts and no user profiles;
• stores no IP addresses. For anonymous statistics the IP address is translated to a country code in memory and immediately discarded;
• counts events, not people: a GPX download or an "Open in RHike" click is stored as a single anonymous row (what, which route, which country, when). Two visits can never be linked to one person.

How often a page is viewed is counted by our own counter at stats.emotics.nl - a server we run ourselves, not somebody else's service. Your browser notices nothing of it: the counting happens on our server, no script is loaded, no cookie is set and nothing is stored in your browser. Per page view we keep the page's path, only the domain name of the site you came from (never the full link), any campaign codes that were in the link, and what your browser sends along anyway: browser, operating system, device type and language preference. Your IP address is not sent along and is not stored. Nothing links two page views to each other or to you, and no data goes to third parties.

Our own application doesn't log anything beyond what's listed above, and keeps the event rows indefinitely - they can never be linked to a person, so that isn't a risk. Our hosting provider may, as is common for web hosting, briefly retain technical access logs at the infrastructure level; that is outside our control.

Price survey and signing up as a tester

The price survey is anonymous: only the four amounts, an optional comment, a country code and a timestamp are stored. There is no identifier attached, so two submissions can never be linked to each other or to you.

If you sign up as a tester or for progress updates, we store your email address, which boxes you ticked and the date. That lives in a separate table, without a time of day and without a country code, precisely so it cannot be tied to a price answer. We use it only for the closed test and for news about the app's progress, never for advertising, and we do not pass it to anyone else. The list is deleted once the test is finished; leaving it earlier only takes a mail.

Preferences

The light/dark theme choice, and whether you've already filled in the price survey, are kept in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device and identifies nothing.

Third parties

• Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, a free service by Hyperknot Software Kft. (Hungary, EU). Your browser requests them directly, which makes your IP address visible to that service; no account, key or cookie is involved. Tiles are served via Cloudflare's CDN, so your request may occasionally route through a node outside the EU. The underlying map data remains © OpenStreetMap contributors, supplemented with OpenMapTiles.
• Route photos are loaded from Wikimedia Commons, with attribution shown next to each photo.
• Place-name search is relayed through this server to OpenStreetMap Nominatim - your IP address is not forwarded.
• Country statistics use the IP Geolocation by DB-IP database (CC BY 4.0), resolved locally on the server.
• When you make a purchase, we verify it with Google Play. We store an encrypted reference to that purchase (no name or account details) to know you're entitled to the feature you bought.
